IEEE 1584-2018 is a guide: by its clause 6.12 nothing in it is a mandatory requirement, alternative methods are not excluded, and the guide itself supplies no acceptance limit for equipment. The same clause cautions that a calculated result can be above or below the actual value, that the method presumes equipment that is installed, operated and maintained as its codes, standards and manufacturer instructions direct and that is applied inside its ratings, and that blast, pressure, projectiles, light and sound fall outside the method.
