NETA technician certification

NETA technician certification is the credential system under which NETA, the InterNational Electrical Testing Association, certifies electrical testing technicians at four levels, from Level 1 Trainee Technician to Level 4 Certified Senior Technician. [1] [2] A technician meets the requirements and passes the examination for each lower level before advancing to the next. [1]
Issuing body
The issuing body is NETA, which develops consensus standards for the installation and maintenance of power systems, accredits electrical testing companies and certifies technicians. [2] Certification is tied to employment: NETA certifies technicians who work for a NETA Accredited Company. [3] [4]
Levels and requirements
Level 1, Trainee Technician, requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. [5] [6] The trainee is examined by the employer rather than by NETA, is not fully certified and works under the direct supervision of a technician at one of the two highest levels. [6]
Level 2, Certified Assistant Technician, and Level 3, Certified Technician, add requirements for hours of safety training, hours of electrical training and years of experience, and each is reached through a closed-book, proctored examination. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] A Level 3 technician supervises technicians at the lower levels, handles routine and moderately complex testing, keeps records and evaluates test data. [13]
Level 4, Certified Senior Technician, carries the largest training and experience requirements of the four levels, and its holder leads large projects and multiple crews, works independently, performs complex investigations and writes reports. [14] [15] [16] [17]
For Levels 2 through 4, technical education in an electrical field can count toward part of the required experience. [18] The experience, education and training requirements for those levels are set out in the 2026 edition of ANSI/NETA ETT. [19]
Maintenance of status
NETA's public certification page states that certified technicians must keep meeting continuing education, training and experience requirements and refers to ANSI/NETA ETT for the details; the page does not itself describe a recertification cycle. [20]
